A Fair and Transparent Appeals Process

This policy explains how eligible adult learners can challenge assessment results, course-completion decisions, refusals of reasonable adjustments or findings of learner malpractice. Appeals are considered against the grounds set out in this policy.

01

Policy Scope

This document applies to adult educators undertaking Dr Layla Institute for Educational Excellence professional development independently or through a school or employer.

Initial delivery is through self-paced online CPD e-modules and, where offered, live online sessions. Face-to-face activities may be introduced only after the applicable permissions, licences, venue safeguards and any necessary accreditation or course-delivery approvals have been confirmed.

Accreditation statement: No course is described as CPD-accredited unless formal approval has been granted for that course and delivery format.
02

Purpose

This policy offers a fair route for adult learners to challenge assessment results, course-completion decisions, refusals of reasonable adjustments or findings of learner malpractice.

It sets out how an appeal can be submitted, how it will be considered and the possible outcomes. The process is intended to support a consistent and transparent review of the decision being challenged.

03

Grounds for Appeal

An appeal may be made where a learner believes that:

  • Published assessment or course criteria were applied incorrectly.
  • An administrative error affected the decision.
  • A request for a reasonable adjustment was not considered.
  • Relevant evidence was overlooked when the decision was made.
Please note: Disagreement with a decision alone does not necessarily establish that an error occurred. Appeals should identify the relevant grounds and provide supporting information where available.
04

Submission Process

Learners should submit an appeal by email to [email protected] within 15 working days of receiving the decision they wish to challenge.

The appeal should explain the grounds for the challenge and include any supporting information available.

Where possible, learners should provide:

  • The course or CPD e-module title.
  • The decision or outcome being challenged.
  • The specific grounds for the appeal.
  • Relevant dates and supporting evidence or correspondence.
  • An explanation of the issue the learner would like reviewed.

Learners may ask the Institute for assistance with the format of their submission. Asking for assistance does not remove the requirement to submit the appeal within the stated timeframe.

05

Review & Decision

Dr Layla Institute for Educational Excellence will acknowledge receipt of an appeal within five working days and aim to decide the appeal within 20 working days.

Where practicable, the appeal will be considered by a reviewer who was not responsible for the original decision. This is intended to provide an appropriate degree of impartiality in the review.

Where using a different reviewer is not possible, the Institute will explain the limitation and consider independent subject-specialist input.

Timescales: The Institute aims to acknowledge appeals within five working days and reach a decision within 20 working days. These are target timescales.
06

Possible Outcomes

Following review, the possible outcomes include:

  • Upholding the original decision.
  • Correcting an identified error.
  • Arranging a reassessment of the learner's work.
  • Arranging an alternative assessment where appropriate.

The learner will receive a written explanation of the outcome and the reasons for the decision. Information about any further applicable review route will also be provided.

07

Online Assessment

For self-paced online CPD e-modules, the evidence considered will depend on the decision being challenged and the information relevant to the appeal.

Relevant evidence may include:

  • Quiz and assessment records.
  • Course completion logs.
  • Submitted activities or learning tasks.
  • Relevant correspondence between the learner and the Institute.
  • Applicable accessibility arrangements or reasonable-adjustment information.

Video evidence is not a routine requirement for an appeal. Any evidence requested should be relevant to the matter under review.

08

Delivery Arrangements

The Institute initially offers professional development for adult educators through self-paced online CPD e-modules and, where available, live online learning.

Any future in-person or school-based provision will be offered only after applicable permissions, licensing, safeguarding arrangements and any relevant accreditation or course-delivery approvals have been confirmed.

Course information: No course will be described as CPD-accredited unless its accreditation has been formally confirmed.
